'Mad Men' Episode 6 Recap: Does This Family Even Exist Anymore?

Mad-men

Despite being a period drama set 45 years in the past, Sunday night’s episode of Mad Men — titled “The Strategy” — could not have been more timely

With Jill Abramson’s firing from the New York Times still garnering wide media coverage as we head into a fresh work week, and rumors flying around over gender’s part in her departure, “The Strategy’s” focus on women’s roles in the home and workplace strangely echoed current events.

The main episodic arc of “The Strategy” centers on SC&P retooling an ad pitch for Burger Chef, a fast food chain. Peggy led the campaign’s inception, but has grown frustrated and doubtful over her creative angle when Don — on a whim — tosses another concept on the table. Peggy’s concept for the Burger Chef pitch revolves around a family with a matriarch feeding her children and husband, the antithesis to Peggy’s life as a single, 30-year-old working woman in New York City. As she and Don begin to mend their relationship by hashing out Burger Chef ideas, Peggy asks Don, “Does this family [in the ad] even exist anymore?” Read more...

New York Times Staffer Counters Reports That Abramson Firing Was Over Pay or Gender

Jbmsn9870

The still unfolding story of Jill Abramson's dismissal from her post as Executive Editor at the New York Times took another turn on Sunday when one of the paper's reporters, Ravi Somaiya, dished out a series of tweets that refute the narrative that her firing was over pay issues related to sexism.

Somaiya, who has been tasked with writing the New York Times' own account of the high profile departure, used his Twitter account to answer some of the lingering questions being asked by media professionals and the general public alike

"Many have asked why lack of voices from NYT/examples of Jill's management style. I will try to answer, based on conversations this week," wrote Somaiya, in the first of a series of tweets on the subject Read more...

These Smart Glasses Track Exactly What You're Looking At

Tobii-glasses-2

Your devices already track your location and communication — why not what you're looking at, too? That's the promise of the Tobii Glasses 2, a pair of high-tech glasses that can track your eyes.

Why would you ever want to do such a thing? You probably wouldn't, but researchers of visual systems are clamoring for that kind of information — what, for instance, a person spends the most time looking at when they're watching TV while holding a tablet.

The glasses are designed primarily for those kinds of scenarios: research projects, testing rooms and simulators — where the thing being looked at isn't just a computer or tablet screen, which would be better served by non-wearable eye tracking like Tobii's EyeX. If you want to study what part of a person's face people look at in various social situations, for example, the Tobii Glasses 2 can tell you. Read more...
