Michael Hartmann says that small amounts of the drug allow him to function better on behalf of his constituents.
German MP Michael Hartmann has admitted taking small amounts of crystal meth. Why? To make him a more "efficient" politician.
The Social Democratic Party member for Wackernheim, aged 51, admitted drug abuse after being accused by a prosecutor based on evidence gained from a drug dealer under surveillance, Der Spiegel reports.
His lawyer said in a statement on Thursday night that "he hoped at that time to be more efficient through drug use.
"He has admitted to having acquired methamphetamine, a substance prohibited under the Narcotics Act, in small amounts and for self-consumption."
The statement stressed that Hartmann had tested negative in psychological tests for addiction.
He is continuing as an MP, despite stepping down from role as a spokesman on domestic policy and cancelling immediate diary appointments.
The criminal trial of his alleged drug dealer is taking place this week.
He stopped after about a month the occasional consumption of these narcotics. He has not de veloped a methamphetamine dependence has not mr hartmann developed...
Mr Hartmann regrets having purchased and consumed these narcotics. Without wishing to excuse his misconduct, he explains it by saying that he hoped at that time to be more efficient by drug use... He does not look for justification for his actions.
He now awaits the decision of the law enforcement agencies.
