Today is World Refugee Day. Almost half of the world’s refugees are children.
Over 50 million people were forced to flee their homes at the end of 2013. More than half of these were children, according to a United Nations report released to mark World Refugee Day on June 20.

The number of refugees in 2013 was 6 million more than those recorded in 2012. This is the largest number of refugees since the end of World War II.
This massive increase was driven mainly by the war in Syria which forced 2.5 million people into becoming refugees at the end of last year and made 6.5 million internally displaced.

Over 5 million Syrian children have been affected by the brutal three-year conflict. More than one million are living as refugees in neighboring countries.
These children are among the more than 1 million Syrians who have flooded into Lebanon over the past three years, fleeing the violence that has ripped apart their homeland.
